How to Fix a PDF That Opens Upside Down or Sideways

A PDF that opens rotated is annoying for every reader. Here is how to fix it permanently so it stays correct in every viewer.

Why some PDFs open rotated

Two main causes:

  1. The pages were scanned with the document fed in the wrong orientation
  2. The PDF rotation was set in the file metadata but some viewers ignore it

The first cause is real (the page content is genuinely sideways). The second is a display quirk where one viewer shows the page rotated correctly and another shows it sideways.

The fix is the same in both cases: physically rotate the pages and save a new file that displays correctly in every viewer.

The fastest fix

Open the Rotate PDF tool and drop your file in. Choose the rotation angle needed (90 degrees clockwise, 90 degrees counter clockwise, or 180 degrees), apply it, and download the corrected PDF.

The output is a new PDF where every page is at the correct orientation, baked into the file. Any viewer that opens it will display it correctly.

Step by step

  1. Open the Rotate PDF tool.
  2. Drop your PDF into the upload area.
  3. Choose the rotation needed:
    • 90 degrees clockwise: if the top of the page is pointing right
    • 90 degrees counter clockwise: if the top of the page is pointing left
    • 180 degrees: if the page is upside down
  4. Click the rotate button.
  5. Download the corrected file.

The original file is unchanged. The new file has the rotation applied to every page.

When only some pages are rotated

The Rotate PDF tool applies the same rotation to every page. If your PDF has most pages correct but only a few rotated, use the Edit PDF Pages tool instead. It lets you select and rotate specific pages individually.

A quick rule:

  • All pages wrong by the same angle: use Rotate PDF
  • A few pages wrong while the rest are fine: use Edit PDF Pages

Why "rotate in the viewer" is not a real fix

Most PDF viewers have a rotate option in their toolbar. This only changes how the page looks in your current viewer session. It does not save the rotation to the file. When you close and reopen the file, or when someone else opens it, the page is sideways again.

For a permanent fix, you need a tool that physically rotates the page content and saves a new file. That is what the Rotate PDF tool does.

After rotating

The corrected PDF is ready to use directly. You can:

  • Send it by email or upload to a portal
  • Merge it with other corrected PDFs using Merge PDF
  • Run Basic OCR if you also need the text to be searchable (OCR works better on correctly oriented pages)

Common gotchas

If you rotated to the wrong angle and the document is still sideways, just rotate again. The tool works on the current state of the file, so two clockwise rotations equal a 180 degree turn.

If you rotated the whole file and now realize only a few pages were actually wrong, reload your original file and use Edit PDF Pages to fix just those pages.

If your PDF has password protection, unlock it first with the Unlock PDF tool, rotate, then re-protect if needed.

Why this is one of the most common PDF complaints

Rotation issues happen more often than people expect because scanners and phone cameras do not always detect orientation correctly. The result is a PDF that looks fine to one person and sideways to another.

The permanent fix takes thirty seconds and prevents the issue from coming back. Worth doing whenever you create or receive a rotated PDF.

Common questions

Will rotating change the visual quality of my pages?

No. Rotation only changes orientation. Text, images, and resolution stay identical. The file size also stays essentially the same.

Why does the same PDF look correct in one viewer and sideways in another?

Some viewers honor the rotation metadata in the file, others ignore it. The fix is to physically rotate the pages so every viewer shows the same correct orientation.

Can I rotate a password protected PDF?

Not directly. Unlock the file first using the Unlock PDF tool with the original password, then rotate, then optionally re-protect.

Do I need to install anything to rotate a PDF?

No. The Rotate PDF tool runs in your browser. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS without installation.
