How to Rotate a Single Page in a PDF

When one page in a PDF is sideways but the rest are fine, you do not need to rotate the whole file. Here is the precise way to fix just that page.

Why one page is sideways

This usually happens with scanned PDFs. A page got fed sideways into the scanner, or a phone photo was captured in landscape while the rest were portrait. The result is a PDF where most pages are fine but one or two are rotated 90 or 180 degrees.

Rotating the whole PDF would just make the rest sideways. You need a tool that lets you rotate one page at a time.

The right tool for this

Use the Edit PDF Pages tool. It shows thumbnails of each page and lets you select and rotate individual pages. The full PDF Rotate tool is meant for rotating every page at once, which is not what you want here.

Step by step

  1. Open the Edit PDF Pages tool.
  2. Drop your PDF into the upload area.
  3. Wait for the thumbnails to load.
  4. Click on the page that is sideways. It should highlight to show it is selected.
  5. Use the rotate option (90 degrees clockwise or counter clockwise as needed).
  6. If the page is now upside down, rotate once more.
  7. Export and download the corrected PDF.

The other pages are not touched. Only the page you selected is rotated.

When to rotate every page instead

If every page in your PDF is sideways (for example, the whole document was scanned in landscape but should be portrait), use the Rotate PDF tool instead. It applies a single rotation to all pages in one operation, which is faster than rotating each page individually.

A quick rule:

  • One or a few pages wrong: Edit PDF Pages
  • All pages wrong by the same amount: Rotate PDF

Why this matters more than it seems

A sideways page in an otherwise correct PDF looks unprofessional, especially in documents you send to clients, schools, or government portals. Rotating individual pages is one of those small fixes that takes thirty seconds but visibly improves how the file is received.

It also fixes a real usability issue. Readers tilt their heads or rotate their phones to read sideways pages, which is annoying. Fixing the rotation makes the document much easier to read.

After rotating

The corrected PDF is ready to use directly. Common next steps:

  • Merge with other corrected sections using Merge PDF
  • Run Basic OCR if you also need the text to be searchable (OCR works better on correctly oriented pages)
  • Send the file by email or upload to a portal

What this does not change

Rotation only affects how the page is displayed. It does not change the resolution, file size, or content of the page. Text that was readable will still be readable. Scanned images stay at their original quality.

Common questions

Will rotating affect the file size?

Barely. Rotation only changes the orientation metadata of the page, not the content. The size of the output is essentially the same as the input.

Can I rotate by an angle other than 90 degrees?

No. PDF rotation is limited to 90, 180, and 270 degree increments. If a page is tilted by a small angle, that needs to be fixed by editing the source image, not by PDF rotation.

Why does the page look correct in my viewer but appear rotated when I send it to someone else?

Some PDF viewers ignore rotation metadata. The fix is to use a tool that physically rotates the page rather than just changing a display flag. Edit PDF Pages does this.

Will rotation work on scanned (image only) PDFs?

Yes. The tool rotates the page regardless of whether the content is text or scanned images.
